when I went down to the islands originally, i didn't know what i was going to find -- or lose. over the years, though, i think the pace and the people have allowed me to just quietly get in touch with who i really am and the things that matter to me.

Some of the best songs on when the sun goes down were written in the islands -- and many of the realizations that've drawn me to the different songs we've cut, especially over the last few records, happened sitting on that old blue chair or in some half-forgotten little hole in the wall. when something gets inside you like that, you want to share it with other people.

over the last three years, i've found myself writing songs and capturing the stories of the people who've shaped my life. those songs happened just because, and then in time, i realized that i had the makings of a song cycle. that song cycle grew up to become be as you are, perhaps the music that's the closest to my heart -- because it's created from everything that's shaped my soul.

i hope you like it, because it's easily the most personal thing i've ever done.
